Festive Roast: Lady Fluffykins, The Yule cat
Lady Fluffykins, the Yule Cat
A Christmas legend with a taste for the finer things.
Art by Robb Mirsky
Meet Lady Fluffykins, our delightfully mischievous Red Bourbon from Apaneca-Ilamatepec, El Salvador. She’s smooth, sweet and beautifully balanced, with rich cocoa, golden sugarcane sweetness, a zesty twist of lime and delicate floral notes. Elegant? Absolutely. A little mysterious? Naturally. The sort of house sized cat who would judge your coffee-making technique then smack your mug off the table? Almost certainly.
But don’t let that fluffy name fool you. Lady Fluffykins takes her inspiration from Jólakötturinn, the legendary Yule Cat of Icelandic folklore.
According to Icelandic tradition, this enormous, house-sized, fearsome feline prowls the winter landscape at Christmas, hunting down anyone who hasn’t received new clothes for the festive season. Yes, really. (Hence those naked butted folks, thanks Robb) Forget an awkward family dinner, this cat has much bigger consequences in mind. The legend is traditionally associated with finishing the season’s wool work in time for Christmas, and was famously immortalised in a poem by Icelandic writer Jóhannes úr Kötlum in 1932.
Enter Lady Fluffykins. She's different kind of Yule Cat, on the prowl for anyone caught without good coffee this holiday season. Luckily, this delicious red bourbon coffee might just keep you off her dinner menu.
What’s in the cup?
Expect a comforting richness of cocoa, the gentle sweetness of sugarcane, a bright splash of lime and subtle floral notes that keep everything wonderfully lively. The washed process brings clarity and balance to the cup, letting each flavour shine without stepping on anyone’s paws.
